If I'd have to pick between black on white or white on black, I'd pick the former, as white on black creates a text that in my opinion glows at you, which I personally find more annoying than the reverse.

I like white text on black backgrounds because on my laptop's screen the brightness goes way higher than most monitors I've seen...it's on most newer Toshiba laptops...anywho, the whites are really stark and it's tough to look at white backgrounds some of the time.
