The thing is though there will be a dx10 card out in november/december for around 280 dollars that will beat the performance of both of those. So why not just wait.

I'll probably list that when it comes out.

Basically what I do is I have a simple spreadsheet setup with all the components listed of a brand new high-end custom gaming machine / workstation. Every so often I go through this list of products and upgrade them, update the prices, etc. The reason I do this is so WHEN I have the money to actually buy myself a new computer, I already know exactly what I am getting and how much it will cost me.

The idea is to make the spreadsheet based on what is available now, as if I was going to buy this machine now. So when new products come out that are cheaper and better, than I will update my list.

Are you waiting to hit the lottery or something?

in all reality it doesn't really matter, both cards give superb performance if setup properly. the card powering my main gaming rig is an x1800xt 512mb, which i've overclocked from 625/750 to 689/765 without any problems whatsoever. i also would not get a top-of-the-line card, if for no other reason than you will end up paying way too much money for it now. i got this x1800 on sale from $500 down to $299 just a few months ago, and already the x1900xt's are below $300. the geforce 7900 series are great cards, but don't expect them to be worlds better than a comparably priced radeon card because they aren't. in fact once you turn on all the graphical niceties the 1900 is considerably faster, especially in crossfire. that plus the fact that you can run HDR + AAA and you have a very beautiful gaming experience.

and no, ATI does not have "Major driver issues". i've been using radeon cards for the past 10 years and have yet to have it be the cause of computer malfunctions. people who claim this typically either have something else wrong with their computer, or did not set it up right. the card itself being bad is also a possibility, but now that ATI has extremely strict guidelines for 3rd party manufacturers who build their cards, no matter who you buy a radeon card from it will be identical to the ones sold by ATI. the sticker on the heatsink will probably have been changed, and certain companies like HIS Tech like to put big masses of copper on their products in place of the stock setup, but the actual board itself will be the same.

also a quick note on overclocking, the first generation x1800's only had a 5 power coil setup, which severely limited their overclockability. the later gen had 6, and the new 1900's have 7 so they can be very heavily overclocked given the right cooling is available.

like i said at the beginning, however, it doesn't matter. each company has very good cards and they all perform about the same across the board.

and, since AMD just recently bought out ATI it will be interesting to see how the two work together in the future.

I'm going to assume you're referring to my post.

I never said ATi cards have major driver issues.

I said I've had major driver issues with ATi cards.

Context is everything, tyvm.

actually i wasn't, i didn't read all the previous posts didn't mean for it to seem like a personal attack. sorry.

no, the driver thing seems to be a common misconception among people looking to build a PC or buy a better VGA card for their machine. in the computer store i used to work at and on WoW it seems the consensus is that if you aren't running an AMD + nVidia setup you are a "nub". when asked why it's odd how many bull reasons they give.

LOL... that's true Enron. A lot of computers are built with these two components and so that generation thinks nothing is better.
they cant tell you, cause unlike many here, have only being into computers for less then 7 years.
dosent it remind you of the os and browser wars?
now ask them to do a win3.1 on an old 286, and they'd all be airheads...LOL

Rofl

I went to Fry's Electronics today (is that a nationwide thing?) and one of the "gurus" in the computers section told me that a true guru wouldn't even consider an ATi card. Then my dad, who has a master's in computer science and a master's in networking something something and programming something (I don't remember the full name...pretty irrelevant I guess), both finished in the late 80s, walks up and asks the guy if he's "lying to my daughter". Then the "guru" guy has the nerve to tell my dad he doesn't know what he's talking about. I decided then would be a good time to walk over to the soundsystem section...

I use ATi and AMD....I have no problem whatsoever with the 9600PRO card (Yes, I know it's old and I plan on getting a 1800 or 1900 when the money is right) and any issues I've had have been human error. I clocked it to see where it ranked and itf my processor wasn't crappy (AMD 2500+), then I would have gotten some decent scores.

Like Enron says, it doesn't really matter. Research the cards and buy what is needed for what you intend on using it for.
