Gym Noob

I'm moving north on Friday, midnight for college, and I don't want to destory my health (or what's left of it). I want to get a gym membership and start getting into shape. Any tips and advice on that? I've never used a gym before, and I'm going to be walking in as a level 1 noob. What/how do I workout?

Save the bucks....go to the library and get a workout book....by the bench and weights, the bench comes with a workout plan and all the reps and positions, etc, and build your own gym. A jump rope, too. Work at your own pace, when you have time. There are also videos/cd for training, all types of training.

Gyms are overrated.

The uni should have a gym for you. FREE! Just go in and start working out. If you need to, find a friend who works out and lift with them. But don't start something that you don't plan on sticking with. Working out is a good thing for the health but if you start and stop, you'll feel the ups and downs.

First, don't just go in and start lifting/exercising. Develop a workout plan and stick to it. Create a log and make sure by the end of your workout, you finish it all. http://www.exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html

Use that site to learn the exercises and develop a workout plan. If you develop a plan, you'll be less likely to skip days or lifts/exercises.

You'll be pretty sore your first two or so weeks, but each week after that, your body will adjust and get used to you doing load bearing exercises.

Look, if you go to a good gym, just be up front and honest. Since you're gonna be in a dorm its not pratical to have a bunch of gyn equipment.

So, walk in and be like(to the first cute chick you see), "I need help. I've never done the gym thing before and I want to get fit."

They'll look at you like a virgin(heck, maybe you're still a virigin) and want to bust your cherry.

Oh, ok. The good thing about you living on campus is that you'll be right next to the school gym. You'll be able to go whenever you want. There will be no excuse for you not going to the gym.

From what I have found, finding a gym partner is hard, and can hurt you more than it can help you. First, its hard to find one that is going to be dedicated and going to finish all your reps/sets. If they slack, most likely you will slack off.
