Jobs in photography?

Hey all,

Basically I can go to the local college for free because my dad is a psychology professor there. I have no idea what I want to do for a living, and I don't really like any of their computer courses, so I have decided to get a Canon Digital Rebel XT and major in photography. My father is fine with this, so I'm stoked... But I have one question: What can I do with a degree in photography? Can I make decent money out of it?

Thank you in advance for the replies!

That's a great camera, my dad actually has the same one. As far as a degree in photography goes, a lot of people have told me that it's pretty much pointless. My cousin majored in it at Oxford (major uni) and she develops film at Wal-Mart now. It's probably just because she's an idiot though.

My dad, on the other hand, majored in graphic design at a small community college and now he does all the computer work for 2 major companies in my city. Networking, web design, troubleshooting, even installing security systems. The biggest part of his job, however, is photography, and he makes great money doing it. We always laugh about how he does less graphic design than anything else, and that's what he majored in.

So I don't know. I guess you don't really need a degree in it. My neighbors renovated their garage into a photo studio after they retired, it was always a passion of theirs. So I guess If you have the equipment, there's not much to stop you from setting up shop right away if you have the clientelle. Wink

I think photography is the kind of thing where you need either real talent and experience in it, or at least passion for it. If you don't have any experience, and you don't have the passion (it sounds like you just picked photography at random) then you're not going to be motivated to even finish a major in it. That's the way I would see it for myself, perhaps you would approach it differently.

I actually am quite passionate about photography... It's just that I have never had a good camera and I don't really have all the insider "tips", if you will. So about every 15th shot comes out amazing.

I'm working on a portfolio of my pictures to put online... Should be up in a couple days. Smile

Are you going to study just photography? I think double-majoring would be something you'd be interested in. In what, I do not know.

I noticed that in my fourth semester I can get an internship... Hmm, that would be pretty sweet. Could help me get some sort of job.
