Help with cutting out space?

Hi guys,

Sorry about the subject line but this photoshop idiot doesn't have a clue what else to call it!!!

I have a photo of my 2 children, but they are not laying close together. I want to cut out the floor thats between them to bring them closer together? Does this make sense?
So sorry, I've been over and over the help index, but I can't find what I need! I know, BIG idiot!
Could someone please help me?

many many thanks!!

Hmm... you could try Quick Masking.

Quick Masking - you press Q to switch off/on Quick Mask mode. While in quick mask mode, you use the Brush/Fill tools to "highlight" the canvas. When you switch off the mode, anything that was "highlighted" will not be selected. You can inverse selection (Select > Inverse) to, well, inverse the selection (anything that is selected will not be and anything that isn't will be).

If I had to use it for your picture, I would turn Quick Mask mode on, use the Brush tool to "highlight" one of the subjects, switch off the mode, inverse selection, use the Free Transform option of the Marquee Tool to manipulate the selected subject closer to the other. Smile

Yeah, I'd do a mask.
