Gradient Brush in Illustrator 9
I can build a quasi gradient in Illustrator using multiple rectangles with varying shades, and then define the group as a brush to make a rather decent pipe pattern. If I use a gradient to do it, it tells me I can't. However, one of the preset brushes is a red sphere with an obvious gradient. Is there anyway I can use a gradient in a brush?

yes you can use a gradient in a brush
first you make a gradient you like and then you fil a square or any object with it, then you choose expand object
next you degroup the object and hit the enter
then you choose (again from the object menu) cutmask (this is a free translation from the dutch version i've got, the quick mode is <option> <apple> <7>) any case you have to remove the mask, then you choose to degroup the object. Now you can remove the outer line , the left over is de basic for your gradient brush. Its is also possible to give the gradient some different color, because all the gradients are now indepent objects, each wich you can manipulate...
oke now its time to make the brush, but i think that is not your problem.
i hope this is of some use for you
