Transparency problem (maybe it's just a browser problem?)

Hiya, I'm new to this forum and I guess the graphics world in general.
Anyways, I'm fiddling around with PS and DW to make a website for fun to learn how to use the programs more than anything, I suppose.

So I made a simple header bar, and after searching through many tutorials, I still could not make my header image perfectly transparent, so I ended up using a matte.

But now, the matte color is somehow different from the background -__- I used the exact same hex codes for the color, so I don't get what's going on. What's stranger is that I didn't have any of this problem in Firefox, but IE is giving me all sorts of problems. I'm also having the same trouble with a simple png image made out of text.

What's going on?

PNG transparency isn't supported in IE. Try using a GIF instead.

with gif you only have two transparency options 100% or 0%. so half-transparency (alpha-transparency) isn't supported.

what you should do is NOT use transparency at all. just add a background color to the images that will match the background of the page.

For PNG's alpha transparency to work in IE you should use this hack:
