Jason....prepare for no life if you do declare that major. Also, what are your scores on the SAT/ACT? I hope you have over a 1300/30, respectively on those tests, otherwise you won't make it into those top ranked unis. Not saying you don't have a chance, but it's slim pickings with those.
Actually, yes. I do have the grades to get into CSULB, Syracuse, UCI, SDSU, and many others. I think the rest come down to how much I improve my scores on the SAT and my letters of reccomendation. I believe if you convert my scores over to the 1600 scale I got a 1200+. But that was taken blindly, I hadn't done any reviewing for it. But I took a practice test from the SAT practice book right after the SAT and I reviewed after and raised my score a hundred+ points. I am taking it again in April so I will tell you how I do. I expect a much better score.
The thing that killed me was the correct sentence section. I did well on the essay 8/12, but the writing section killed my overall score. I plan to be prepared next time I take it.

I started Uni this year. It's great'n'all but i still live with my parents which kinda sucks.
Well, once i get involved in some stuff (I'm gonna join a lot of clubs), it'll get interesting.
Plus I'm making some personal changes which are all gonna lead some pretty cool stuff going down this year for me.
It feels pretty good though, starting Uni, especially since i got into Law outta my junior/6th form/second to last year at High/Grammar/Secondary School.
BTW I'm wondering in the US, are the words college and Uni pretty much interchangeable? Because that's what i though, but i heard someone from the US say, they were going to go to college and then to Uni. Is that like community colleges (I suppose what we'd call a polytechnic), but you call other Uni's colleges as well right?
We call some Secondary Schools colleges here (Either Grammar, High School, or College)

Disclaimer: I'm in California, USA. Sorry if these initials don't make sense to people outside.
I've applied (and have been accepted by) to CSUN - but it's one of those schools that anyone can practically get into.
I've also applied for UCLA, UCB, UCI, and UCSD. Their admission decisions are given out in March, so I still have some waiting to do. LA is the closest of the four to me, but I don't really have a preference. If none accept me, I think I may go to Santa Monica Community College for two years then transfer into a UC.

Vierstein, we do interchange the meanings, though there are some differences. Colleges tend to be smaller in size than a university. Community colleges are the equivalent of a polytechnic school. Out structure is Elementary/High School/College.
Clincher...UCB and UCI? Berkeley and Irvine are a tough spots man, what's your intended major?

Kidd: Actually, UCLA and UCB are the hardest UC's to get into. UCI has gotten harder to get into over the years because of its great science program.

I'm a second year undergraduate at Kansas State University (hyuck hyuck) studying mathematics and computer science. I suppose I could have gone to better schools; I got a 34 on my ACT--I took the exam after two days of nothing but ice cream consumption, tracking, and sleep deprivation, with no prior preparation--did well in high school, but I couldn't really afford anything out of state. The only support I got from the government came in the form of loans, and I got virtually nothing in the way of private scholarships.

Maybe I'm just looney, but the social aspects and opportunities of college don't really appeal to me. At all.
You'll probably change. I never drank in high school, had no interest in it. When I got to college, everything changed. Partying is fun with the right people. The stereotypical college party with kegs and whatnot can be fun, but hanging out with a small, close group of friends at someones apartment/house is so much better.
And yeah, college is fun. The free weekends during the first few years end up turning into opportunities to do homework later on though..
Seconded. I never drank or attended many social events in high school, but my first month here changed everything. Big parties are great to go to every now and then, but hanging out at a friend's place--with an ample supply of liquor--is superb.

I plan to get into Engineering (structural, but that could change to another field like electrical). Are they that hard to get into? People have been suggesting me to apply to privates (I have like a 4.4 weight GPA - used by UCs) but I'm a rather lazy bloke. Do I really want to pay an arm and a leg for a college with a fancier name when I can get a good education elsewhere?

I'm also a junior in High School; looking at a career in Chemical Engineering/Chemistry. Right now I like the look of JHU a lot.
I'm really looking foreward to College, both for the fact that I'll be studying something I really like, and the whole being on your own thing.

Yeah, I agree. I don't think its the college you goto, but the experience you get out of it. Anyone can go to a big name college and make nothing of their life.

Here here! I know that if UCI or UCB have they're criteria like MIT or whatever, then yeah, it'll be a little difficult.
Xaimo, I am majoring in Architecture with a possible double major declared in something else. Also, I'll probably minor in comp sci or Japanese next year, depending on everything goes this semester/summer. My major is demanding because of the Visual Art courses but it's not as demanding as Mathematics or Physics will be for Jason. We have late nights completing projects before deadlines etc. Maybe I should make a College Necessity thread...?
