you are very true, BUT what happens when these "designers" only know these 3 or 4 techniques because that's what they stopped at after they took a few tutorials and decided theyre a webdesigner. They have these 3 or 4 trends down just fine, but what happens when the trends change? They have to learn more and more tutorials. I think learning as much as you can when it comes to design, is a better idea than staying focused on trends. Look at amazon.com. That site has virtually NO graphical design put into it (besides the tabs at the top and a few banner ads) and it's always been that way, yet it's a very successful site. Same thing w/ most of the bigger sites. These are, for the most part, trend-less pages. Theyre more focused on layout and navigation, and of course their content, which makes these sites popular. So why is having the knowledge of all these trends and keeping up to date w/ these trends so much more important? I think designers should be focusing more on what sells and not on what looks cool. But theres a time and place for each aspect i guess, so i dont think theres much need for such of a debate, since both ends are equally important. My opinion is that usability and function is a bit more important than the latest blending option setting to hit the photoshoppers community.

Definatly. I mean, a designer in my eyes is someone who gives their own twist to everything they design. No two of their designs should be the same.
I personally dont like design tutorials that much. I find them very annoying and repetative. I mean, how many hundreds of times have you seen how to make something look like its on fire or whatever. Good-tutorials.com has currently got 8709 tutorials. Most of which would probably be covered 5 - 10 times each.

IMO, "designers" are people who know what "design" means. They have that instinct.

Most designers these days would benefit from picking up a good design book!

You have hit the nail on the head there.
Amazon is a content driven site. Most of the biggest content driven sites have minimal graphics in the layout.

Graphic design on web pages is definatly a good thing though and even trends have their place imo.

Graphic design goes well beyond just making images. Sure amazon may not have a lot of images but someone still had to choose the layout, text, etc... Think of it as laying out a magazine, or newspaper. It wasn't just something slapped together.

But graphic design isn't just for websites however. There is a lot to learn when it comes to both web design and graphic design. you have to be creative, and by that i mean, know what the **** you are doing.
