Incase anyone missed it, there was an article on Slashdot that said it would take approximately 9 weeks to pump the water out of New Orleans. If you aren't familiar with the geography of New Orleans, the majority of the city is under sea-level. Basically, the water will continue to fill the city until it reaches sea-level. The Slashdot article talks about a study during 2004 regarding hurricane Ivan and the effect it would have on New Orleans if it hit. It's a very good read.
"It looks like New Orleans is going through something very close to the worst case scenario right now. This somewhat prescient study, written well before the hurricane, describes some of the challenges (engineering and otherwise) facing New Orleans. 'In this hypothetical storm scenario, it is estimated that it would take nine weeks to pump the water out of the city, and only then could assessments begin to determine what buildings were habitable or salvageable. Sewer, water, and the extensive forced drainage pumping systems would be damaged. National authorities would be scrambling to build tent cities to house the hundreds of thousands of refugees unable to return to their homes and without other relocation options.' The hypothetical is looking awful close to reality right now. What can be done about draining and rebuilding New Orleans in light of the massive flooding, and what can be done to prevent and/or lessen such disasters in the future?"

I've been watching 4-6 hours of TV news and all there was was Katrina. Gotta thank the news reporters too, always keeping us up to date. Thank god I haven't seen any celebrities' (not that I care about their lives) gossips or marriages or whatever .

There are like 5 articles on this. I find it amusing how some of our 'enemies' are sending a lot of money and help our way after we've been hit. I think it's a ploy to gain good graces with the US and to try to sneak under the radar.
On the other hand, I am over relieved to see the help and response the world has given us after our deadliest natural disaster. My grandmother is from Mississippi and still has relatives there. I don't know how they're faring at the moment, though.
