You might want to check out a band called The Rx Bandits (The Pharmacuticul Bandits). They're sort of a mix between ska and RATM.

I'm sure you'd appreciate God Speed! You Black Emperor. But you're probably going to have to buy off Amazon, because they're damn near impossible to find at the music shoppes.
You might also like Tom Waits. His CD's are usually soundtracks for his wife's plays. He's very...original. On one of his songs he's listed in the credits as playing "the chicken bones" among many other off the wall instruments. "Alice" is an amazing CD to get started with.
Down & Advocation
Check out Stereolab. They've got a strong cult following, very nice smooth sound. They recently lost one of the band members (the backup vocalist) in an accident of some kind. I'm not sure if they're going to keep recording or not. Margerine Melody, The Man with 100 Cells, and Lo Boob Oscillator are some good songs to check out.

Isn't Explosions in the Sky a side project of some of the God Speed! members? I'll give them a listen and let you know what I think.

It's actually "Godspeed You! Black Emperor," if you want to be technical.

Jeremie: Pretty damn good list, Haggard rocks
[Saw Steve Vai live, killer show] You definitely need to check out Maudlin of the Well.
Rush is a good band that I don't think was mentioned.

Heh thanks, I want to see Vai live too (alls I have are G3 shows on video, which are still awesome, but no way like the live thing. I only saw Dream Theater and Joe Satriani live, which was a killer show, both at the same time
)

Xaimo, it's nice to see someone with similar tastes!
I have heard G&D, and they're great. My all time favourite by them is definately their remix of Andain - Beautiful Things. Their upcoming release with Markus Shulz and Departure, "Without You Near" is actually quite good as well. Have you heard it?
Sasha was here in Toronto playing last Saturday night (Sunday morning), and apparently he was incredible. He went back to back with Steve Lawler, and it's being described as one of Toronto's most memorable nights. I wish I could have been there!

There really are too much of crappy bands in the "alternative" genres. I'm thinking all the different kinds of "cores" except the original hardcore. metal-core, emo-core, screamo-core, etc...
wow, i really wasnt expecting to meet any other fans of (real) hardcore on here. check out Paint It Black.
