what is the document size i have to work with

822x415 is the viewport dimensions of someone using 800x600 resolution. But thats a small minority. 1016x583 is the viewport size of someone using 1024x768 resolution so that or smaller is a safe bet for a website done in flash.

I think 700x500 is a good dimension for a flash website.

822x415 is NOT the dimensions for someone on an 800x600 monitor!! The dimensions are bigger than the resolution.

Typically a "safe" dimension for 800x600 is 760x420 and that takes into account other screen elements. (Like defualt browser toolbars, etc)
