Yeah it is kind of cheap for housing down there, but i think that is why there school systems suck really bad down there because of taxes and what not.

Wow Drix, way to get so offensive. I was joking. ...and in Canada, Splinter Cell is THE game (the cold from our igloos make our video cards stay cool, thus better graphics).

I can agree with that one, public school was a joke here in Florida, but it's good living. America is really diverse so price of living will depend primarily on where you decide to shack up. I don't know much on rent prices here though as I'll be living at home next semester.

Where I live (California) it's quite expensive.... houses, food, cars, etc - all pretty high priced. Though on the other hand, the weather is great nearly all year round, and the beach is always near
I've lived in Nashville, TN though and it was actually very affordable there. At the moment I can hardly afford to "rent" a house or apartment here in CA, though in TN, I could probably "buy" a house with what I have. It's pretty nice there too (though the weather isn't as good).
If cars are too expensive, depending on where you live, public transportation "can" be mostly all you need... i.e. I took the train and subway to and from school for about 2 years... I did drive from home to the station, but it was close enough I "could" have rode my bike or took a bus if I have felt so inclined. If you buy a used car for pretty cheap and get insurance that primarily only has coverage for the driver of the other car (if you hit them) and coverage in case they sue you, then it can be more affordable.... I have an old car that's not worth saving if it were in an accident, so my insurance is somewhere around $500/yr for that.
As far as college... I don't know how it is if you're from out-of-country... but if you go to a school in a state other than where you are a resident (for a certain number of months or years I think) then they charge you a much higher tuition. (this may be only for state-funded schools, could be different for private univerities - I dunno).

I plan on attending UNL this fall and I can tell you that I have no scholarships or whatever to pay for college. I'm gonna have to take out loans and stuff to pay tuition so yeah..cost of living and educating myself will cost an anal load...
I am also however getting a lot of money form Pell grant and FAFSA and other grants( 1. live with grandparents, 2. black, 3. just plain poor since everyone's unemployed.) Depending on where you go to school, it could be as high as 15k a year upwards to 100k per year....but that's only if you go to princeton or harvard....
If I was you I'd move to northern states or somewhere south like Texas, arizona, new mexico...places like that where cost of living isn't too bad. East and West coast living( cali, NY) places like that where there are millions of people living, you'll guarenteed to pay a lot.
just trying to help and sorry for the ramble.

First off, I am not sure what kind of loans you would be eligible for coming in from out of the country. So school might be on your dime, it might not.
Either way, it will cost you a much bigger price for school here as most people (as Dave said) who live out of the state in which they are going to be going to school pay a higher price.
Second, The midwest is pretty inexpensive compared to the East coast or Westcoast (and by midwest I don't mean the Dakotas that area of the west is much much cheaper I am sure, but more like Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, etc).
As far as cars go, hey its a trade off. We pay little on gas and you get better health insurance for less. Kids that are 17 and 18 probably are not buying their own cars unless
A.) they have saved well and have worked toward getting a car... and a civic is a cheaper car so that could be the case.
2.) They are not, their parents are getting it for them.
E.) It is probably a combo, they are buying it with the help of their parents in some way or another... actuallyu for that they would probably need a parent cosigner as I am not sure to how many actually have enough credit to get a car by themselves.
of course it could just be that they are buying it and have no idea what they just got themselves into and will extend their credit beyond their means.
Overall, depending on where you go it can be cheaper, it can be more expensive. Way the costs of where you are thinking of living and the school you are thinking of going to and the job you think you can get (and how much they might pay)... As with all major decisions weigh it heavily before you decide to move.

Where in FL are you? Over here in the panhandle, we have some of the best public schools in the country. Now, when I lived in Tampa, I remember school sucked ***. We had a 12 foot fence with razor wire around it, because the school was in the middle of a gang war zone.
Up here in FWB, it's much better. Actually, at some point or other, Fort Walton Beach was determined to be the 10th best city to live in in the US. I like it here. But houses are expensive as hell in town.
EDIT: Oh yeah, and taxes aren't bad either. It never hurts that Florida has no state income tax. I only have to pay federal income taxes, and our sales tax is only 6% here (for comparison, it's 10% sales tax in Montgomery, AL and you pay state income taxes there too).

Haha, well actually I live in New Tampa (just north of Tampa) but it is more hicksville like. If you can claim recidency for X amount of time (I forgot) there are some great scholarships available, I got 75% for Florida public college paid for with Florida Bright Futures. But on short notice I don't know if you could qualify.
