Is america a cheap place to live?
ok, basically, i'm looking to satrt driving now, but looking at how much it is gunna cost me got me thinking about all the kids in america who are driving nice cars at 16 - 18.. like one guy i speak to he's 18 and has just got a brand new honda civic...
it has been in the back of my mind for a while about possibly moving to america to go to college or something, or maybe just to get a job and work.. but i was wondering if it was as cheap to live out there as it is made out? i know this varies from place to place as it does everyware in the world but i just want a general idea
also, where are cool places to go, prolly a city would be best...
ne ideas?

I'm about to move to Lousiana and the Baton Rouge/New Orleans area is pretty fun to live. Anything up north in the midwest where I am now is pretty boring (south dakota, north dakota, iowa, etc.)

It depends on the location... I've heard houses in some areas of Florida are real cheap, but I don't know how accurate that is.

Not in Fort Walton Beach... the house prices have been steadily increasing. The house I'm renting is for $865 a month. If I bought a house that's exactly the same size as it, the mortgage would be about $1500 a month. It's insane.
However, if you go north a little ways to Crestview (a.k.a. Crestucky, 'cause it's kinda hick-town, like Kentucky) the house prices drop dramatically. I could get a better house and pay a mortgage not much higher than my rent.
I just don't want to have a 45-minute commute to work or I'd buy up there.
EDIT: Yes, I've just revealed that I live in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. No more than 15 minutes from the gorgeous white sand beaches of the Emerald Coast.
EDIT 2: I've also revealed I can't always spell well. Typos fixed.

Are his parents paying for everything, or did he earn that himself?
I know of almost no one around my age supporting himself with the ability to waste money like that. I do know plenty of people with "silver spoons" who merely need to cry to mommy and daddy to get some new, shiny, and expensive pile of crap.

It depends. I got almost nothing in the way of scholarships and am scraping by on loans because my family's EFC for federal aid was 50 points above the cut off line for a Pell grant (even though they made $0 during the year). I got almost nothing in the way of private scholarships, because really, I was a lazy **** during high school and didn't do much in the way of community service or outside activities.
If you don't mind paying off a metric ton of debt when you graduate, though, you can get a rather sizable amount of money through loans--it'd allow you to live affluently during your time at school.
I can give you my cost of living/tuition from my last school year, if it'd help.
