I'd enjoy that suspension.
Hearing from family when their in Iraq is rare. My step-dad was over there when the war was just starting, and you almost never get calls. Lost his dad, man thats hard.

It seems to me like all of you 'law-abiders' lost a piece of your soul.

The kid's father died. His mother is away on foreign, hostile soil. And all you care about is how many meters away from the school walls the kid was.

Something is definitely wrong in the way you judge things such as this, how can you be so cold hearted?

It's not being cold-hearted. When they make a law, or a rule, they have to stick to it. You can't get on to one kid for talking on the phone, and then tell the other 'OH ITS OKAY, YOUR MOM CALLED FROM IRAQ'. Rules are rules, no exception.

I still want to know why his phone was on during school hours in the first place.

This is the same thing as what happened to sentencing the spammer for 9 years in jail, and releasing serial killers after 3 years. Or saying that graffiti is the number-one city problem, while gang warfare is at its peak.

We're humans, not robots. We always have to use our own best judgement, and not follow the 'rules' like mindless drones.

If the kid took the time to explain the situation to the teacher then they surely would have allowed him continue the call. If that failed his mother was on the phone, he could have easily asked the teacher to talk to her. Simple lack of thinking and communication on both parts (Teachers and kids).
Still, it's a story blown out of proportion if you ask me.

And those rules ought to reflect "our own best judgement." It's irrelevant, however, if the rule does or does not reflect that judgement. It's there, so follow it. If it's truly that bad of a rule, then enough people will call for change, and it'll be so.

Besides, generally speaking, each peron's best judgement is very different. What if the teacher's and principals' best judgement was enforcing the rule equally, while the student's was continuing communication without explanation? We have a conflict of interests, which should take precedence?
