Photoshop and Illustrator are two essential programs for graphic design. Photoshop, the industry-standard for raster graphics, is good for creating most web graphics (among other things). Illustrator, a vector application, is suited for logos and simple graphics that need to be resizable without quality loss. Some designers use Paintshop Pro, but it is less powerful. GIMP is another alternative for Linux users. Some designers also use 3D Studio Max for creating some 3D graphics. Of course, there are other alternatives to everything out there, but Adobe software is top-notch and sets the bar.

Chris: If you really think good design comes from using expensive or high-powered software, then you're not thinking properly. It comes from your own creativity. Software choice is a minor issue and should reflect your needs, not what other people use. Get a mind of your own. Corel's PhotoPaint is (almost) as capable as Adobe's Photoshop, and far, far, cheaper.

It's what designs you come up with in your head that count, not how well you can follow some tutorial off Phong.com.

I suggest the GIMP, it works on Unix, MacOSX, windows, whatever; best of all, it's free! Wink

I got this "syn Text Editor" thing, I like it a lot for coding.
I use Phostoshop 7 (much cheaper now CS is out)
And Illustrator 10 (also dropped price)
Flash for animation, by far, as you can add code to it as well.

Corel's suite is pretty good too.

Try the trials first.
