Americans like to have a sort of independance from the other nations. I've tried to figure out why, but I realize I'm just confusing the situation with logic.

Example:
America doesn't use the metric system. A very STUPID thing. Us not using the metric system has cost us upwards of $8 billion in our nations history in dealing with international issues.
America also has a different English than Canada or Europe; thanks to Webster. Instead of "colour" we spell it "color". I don't understand why we do this either.

When trying to understand what and why America does things, just remmember this: You're probably confusing the situtation with logic.

It works for us. Plain and simple. Basically it boils down to this, we broke off and became independant a long time ago, and since that time we still have a complex that makes us feel the need to continue to be independant.

I don't even think I remember the time we have had a serious discussion in Washington about changing to metrics. I remember as a kid my teachers said thats the wave of the future and in ten years we would all be using metrics. That was about 18 years ago... when I was close to 7... last I remember hearing about a serious discussion to change.

What's even more backwards is I live in Indiana and we still are one of two states in the US that don't even switch to daylight savings time. We are always on Eastern Standard. So when the rest of the country moves ahead or back an hour, we stay Eastern Standard which literally puts us in Central Daylight for half a year. We are a screwed up people, I can admit that, but all in all, I kind of like it that way

Kickboy, America exists because a bunch of people who were unhappy with England moved over here to start their own country, so that they could live their lives the way that they wanted, and be a different and distinct entity from England. That idea has stuck with the country, for better or worse.
