Linux server setup - Best combo?

Hi there. I'm a real linux noob, but I plan on changing that a bit. Right now for my webdesign needs I run appache on my windows pc, but this isn't really a good solution. I would like to set up my PII 200MHz as a linux box for this purpose.

Someone suggested I'd go with the combo Redhat 8 - GNOME, while someone else suggested Debian, I really don't know what to choose.

What do you guys suggest? Do remember that it should be easy to use and very un-resourceful. I CAN'T run KDE or even YAST, so don't tell me to install SuSe with KDE or something...

Dude with a P2 200mHz get all CLI(command line interface). Do not go for any GUI no matter how stripped down it is (ie. fluxbox).

I suggest going Slackware. You might face a bit of dependency hell but once you get everything set, just leave it on and make changes by SSHing into it.

You could pass for fluxbox. That's for fluxbox is for.

Gil, fix your freakin server. Your sig takes years to load.

For a server which will most likely just sit there on, why take up extra resources with a gui? Especially if it's a 200mHz box.

I'm a linux noob, I don't know any command, so a GUI is handy for me... Unless you know a fast way to learn my way?

For the most part you wont be doing to much on the console - especially if you just want a web server - just configure the conf/ini files like you would on windows.

And yes a gui will just kill your machine so dont bother. For simplicity I would go fedora, for power of configuration and options I would go gentoo. I havent used debian/slackware so I dont know well they compare.

With a 200mhz machine your best bet is to download something like redhat or better yet just get Cent OS for servers. You possibly could run a GUI but it would max the load on the CPU before you can even install and maintain apache, let alone MySQL, PHP etc (if you were planning on installing thoughs). So its best to get use to the command line.
