teach me guitar!!!

hi, i know there are a lot of music fans out there.

and i have been wanting to learn guitar for a while, but never really had the time ( i still dont ), but i want to learn it anyway.. i was wondering if anyone knows of any good beginner sites or practices or whatever i could use to start off. i have some previous music knowledge from being in band in school etc, but not string.

also ill probably buy a guitar too! so anyone know any good quality/cheap guitars and such?
i was wanting to buy a accoustic/electric mix guitar - where you could plug it into a amp and such? not sure how they work exactly but =P

thanks!

Unless you're willing to take lessons professionally, I'd reccomend reading tabs to start. This will allow you to get the feel of the guitar and get some muscle memory set up before you work on reading music. Check out http://www.mxtabs.net

If I may....

If you're serious about learning the instrument, do yourself a favor and don't learn tabs to start. It's a workaround to getting yourself to the point where you'll be playing songs you like rather quickly, but it's a cheat, and like all cheats you're really only hurting yourself. You can do it, but you'll never be a truly great guitar player unless you really put in some time to properly learn to become a technically proficient musician.

You can learn tabs...but generally if you don't have somebody who is a master of their instrument instructing you, you'll get into all KINDS of bad habits, from poor structure and positioning to bad rhythm...all things that with time and proper instruction can be avoided.

In general I'm just saying that if you want to tool around on it go for the tabs, but if you're serious about learning to play the guitar (or any instrument) do yourself a favor and find somebody qualified and respected that is willing to teach you in person.

I've been trained in classical piano and have twenty-two years of various competitions under my belt; no competitions on the guitar but I made the same mistake of starting with tabs, fortunately I did get instruction shortly after but it took me literally years to undo the bad habits I'd picked up in just six months of playing; I've been playing classical guitar (and in a few punk/funk/alternative bands) for the past eleven years. I've been drumming for several bands (nothing currently though) for eight years as well.

Trust me on this one.

Whatever you do, don't watch hideous videos such as this one. The guy doesn't even get the lyrics right. =\

Don't fool yourself into thinking that you don't have enough time, because you do.

well, i guess i would want to start from the beginning , and then work onto tabs... but i also kinda wanna just get into the tabs too - because im not TOO serious about guitar, i just want to be able to play for fun and such- songs and all, but anyway i dont think ill be able to get a professional person to teach me so im gonna be doing it all solo.

btw does anyone have suggestions on good/cheap beginner guitars?

thanks

Cyberfret is good for starting out and other things too.

You'll want to click 'first fret'

Yamaha makes good guitars for beginners, both electric and acoustic. Most people usually get Squire Strats for a first electric. I've never tried one so I don't know if they're worth it.

just pick it up and play, yes, you'll suck for a while but one day it will click and from that day on you'll be able to know your way around a gutair

Squire Strat or Cort (Fender?) are the cheapest, who do produce a good sound... Don't go crazy on an amp, you can buy a better one later...

I've only been playing for about four years now, but I'm willing and open for questions or whatever.
