I used to be a web developer for a hosting company who offers web solutions (e-commerce, online catalogs, intranets, extranets, you name it) but the pay in PHP wasn't so good as ASP and ASP.NET... I used to work from 9am to 7pm or sometimes 'till the next day (crazy deadlines). Right now I'm working as a AA, which in other words, I really miss the work as web developer, but that's another story. I'm applying to a new job as a web designer, which starts in Jan 2005, the pay is great, but from talks I had with some of the employees of that company, the work is a lot. Yeah both developer and designer, are very exhausting careers, but if you really enjoy them or at least one of them, you will not notice the time spend, and maybe, you just became a person with no social life which in other words with no time to spend with friends and girlfriend... like I use to be :P

I'm a freelance Creative running my own design business as a sub contractor. A freelancer but not a cheap one.
There's alot of things to do. I had to learn the business side of things, being creative and software-savvy is not enough.
My work is 50% business (Networking, client briefs, follow-ups, presentations, proposals, mockups, planning, billing etc), 20% Research and 30% creative work.

As someone who works as a subcontracting group i reckon you're pretty lucky to only get 50%. I spend more time talking to clients, doing followup calls, making presentations, doing planning, working out billing hours/billable work, than i do coding.

Well, now that we're past that whole episode...
The best way is to take on projects that will build your resume at the beginning, even if you get slightly low-balled. The trick is to get your name out there, do some projects that are applicable in the real world.
Come up with some site/application and build it. Even if people won't use it, it still demonstrates that you have the skills.

Wow, thanks for all the input! I'll have to get adjusted to the business side of things as that has always kept me down. Lots of great stuff though, I've been slacken too much
