actually sitting down trying to write the code is a great way to learn... when u hit a wall just look it up or come here for help
just try and start with something kind of basic... too many people want to create some type of elaborate video game or something fancy and realize its just too much work

Here's the way I'm learning it.
I have the book SAMs Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL, and Apache all in One. I read through a couple chapters, then experiment with the code. Of course, it isn't my only resource by far.
I use that to introduce me to code, then I investigate some stuff on php.net. Later I come here and check out how other people used the code for inspiration.
It works great. Hands on owns you. ::bandit::
