Both would be ideal. But it's rare that someone really masters both. I mean, I've seen many 'jack of all trades' kind of webdevs - who know PHP well enough, and can make good designs with Photoshop/Flash. But none of them are excellent at either thing. IMO it's better to be a master of one rather than 'be familiar' with both. Of course, it's just my opinion...

this guy is self taught, look at his portfolio. the skin is the same. and the site itsself is the same, he calls himself a webdesigner using som eone elses skin and online shop script written in php.
if i was a busness id wanna look more professional and have it done in coldfusion or asp. too many self taught php people out there.

http://www.kamcom.co.nz/ <---- another 'web design' company in new zealand

http://www.nzwide.com/ <--- i can list more absolute crap web design companies in nz if you want.

hmm natural cause you made some good points, if i would want to be a web designer i would want to be more professional and design unique sites rather than the same skins.

ASP.NET is nice, but it's more of the 'professional commercial whore' language, which means the following:
1) You should only learn it if you want to do web programming for money.
2) You should only learn it if you want to be a pro, in which case you already have to be familiar with server-side scripting (why not PHP?)
Of course, these things are just my opinion, but ASP.NET is a lot harder to get help on, and you don't need it (over PHP) for 99% stuff you'll be making (not you specifically). I mean, what kind of uber-leet object control do you need in a web script? Not to mention most common internet scripts can be efficiently made without OOP at all. In any case, PHP 5 has a better object model, AFAIK it's like C++'s one. Which means very good.

While I agree that things that cost money are generally better than free (i.e. taking a web programming course is generally better than learning yourself, but not always), but you have to consider that not everyone can afford to or wants to spend money on learning this stuff, because they don't know for sure if they want to later turn it into profit. I don't know about win., but the sole fact that he turned to this forum for help instead of taken a web programming course, shows that his intentions aren't purely commercial (correct me if I'm wrong).

there are things you can do in php and in asp. but there are things that you can do in asp that make it faster, bbut at the same time you can make your sql a lot faster using stored procedures and just passing values instead of a whole insert. but then again you can get into relationships and make it faster again. having 15 tables to create 1 table that has repeated data can be faster using multiply tables than just 1 large one. theres a lot of things like this people don;t learn when they teach themselves. im learning asp at the moment, then asp.net, asp.net +VB, and asp.net + C#

You can try out www.brinkster.com (crappy host with banner ads and no FTP access for the 'free' plan, but it gets the job done).

As for XP Home, I feel for you Tongue

PHP is actually a very strong language. I do like it, but the thing that gives it a bad name are people like in this thread sadly enough
