W3C doesn't 'define' XHTML as the latest version of HTML. Simply not true. According to this page: http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/ , HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0 and XHTML 1.1 are all separate W3 recommendations for markup that still operate today. As opposed to, for example, HTML 3.2, which is a 'previous version' of markup.
Again, W3Schools is overrated. It's not in any way the official authority related to web development such as the W3C (or even related to it). It's just a random site that gives out free beginner tutorials, no different from HTML Goodies, Webmonkey, etc.

This, in no way, implies that XHTML is HTML 5.
