Putting photoshop in 16bit mode

You are able to save your images as 16bit bmp files, but is there also a way to set the colors you are able to choose from to 16bit and also have photoshop display your document in 16bit colors? R5G5B5X1 mode preferably

There's an option for 16bit under Image>Mode. I'm not if that's what you're looking for.

I'm not sure if I understand your question as your monitor is most likely set to 'True-Color' 24-bit, or at the least 'High-Color' 16-bit, so that anything you produce in PS is a factual representation of what you get from the imaging software.

If your talking print res, well here comes a whole whack of suggestions from the enlightened participants. I suggest you do a little color management pre-study via Google before this can of worms opens again.Roll Eyes

Here, take a look at this picture.
The right one is a 16Bit bitmap with R5G5B5X1 settings (5 of 16 bits go to red, 5 to blue, 5 to green, 1 bit goes to alpha).
Then take a look at the bottomleft picture, where the colors for each pixel are one of the sort R5G6B5. Allowing for more colors, you can see how its gradients are a lot smoother than the other version.

I need to create bitmaps for an engine that only supports the ones of the kind r5g5b5x1. That's why I want to set Photoshop up so that I can see how my final picture will look like while working on it with those particular bitmap settings. Any ideas?

One of the things you have to be careful about when working with 16-bits / Channel in PS for print is that many color printers and RIP's cannot handle this and may error out when trying to read the file.

Sometimes you can get this file all the way to the printer and then their RIP's cannot handle the image and you will have to change it to 8bit mode.
