scrolling on a timeline

i was hoping someone could give me a start to figuring out how to create a timeline where the user can scroll a cursor across it to reveal different pictures etc.

its suppose to be an interactive historical timeline, and i need the user to scroll to particular dates in history, that will enable other information.

Maybe you could place lots of different buttons next to each other. And when the user moves it's cursor across, it reveals a picture.

I would use Thakur's idea and just create a mask over the timeline so when user places the mouse over a date, for example, it will reveal information below and also be a button to go to a page for that time period.
