3dsmax6- smoothing problem
I have been working on a few rather simple models, and with every single one I work on, I run into problems with smoothing. Attached is an image showing problems I ran into. I tried to smooth out a part of it, trying different techniques - but I didn't have much luck, if anyone can help me that would be greatly appreciated.

Could you post a pic of the wireframe?
My guess is you've got triangles around the openings. Did you use booleans to put those holes in? Booleans generally create triangles... unless you're lucky.
Meshsmooth works best with a mesh ade with only quads. A couple oftriangles wont doo much damage, but if they're on a joiint they can become visible.

Yeah, I made a wireframe render and the tris are easy to see. Lots of them lil buggers...
I'm not sure how best I should avoid using boolean... cutting and such how can I cut a circle shape or whatever? I haven't looked much into it, but I thought booleans were fine, well now I'll have to do it differently I suppose.

what part of the model are you trying to smooth? that doesnt really need mesh smoothing, just slap some smoothing groups here and there and it'll be just fine.

Well, I am trying to smooth out the sphere, mainly the edges around the area that I booleaned... should I not meshsmooth it? I don't know really how I could smoothing group it...

you can chamfer the edges of the boolean holes... you might have to do some welding because of all of the tris there though.

I wonder how one would go about tackling this problem (making the holes in the sphere) without doing what I think UJ did (which is what I would have thougt of to do) which is to create a sphere, then boolean some cylindars out of the sphere for the gun holes.
UJ, I empathise with you b/c I wouldn't know what to do in this situation as far as how to build it w/o using the methods you have employed. If A4D or some other guru could please explain how to achieve a model like this without using booleans (which is so friggin easy compared to other things i've tried, but then you get these TRIs :
: ) then that would be very helpful!!
