How do I make something similar to this?

I'm trying to make a new design, and I'm looking around the web and came across www.phirebrush.com.

My question is: What kind of software should I use to make curly things like the ones on either side of the logo? Illustrator?

Just to have said it, I'm not thinking of making a remake, but I was just wondering what kind of software to use to achieve similar effects...

Illustrator can be easily used for doing it.
You can either do each curl by hand with the Pen tool or use a special tool (which I forgot the name) that will do curls and other things for you (just take a look at the toolbar and you should be able to find it, it is a hand pointing at a curl).
If you can't find your way with this I'll try to help you when I have a little bit more of time or maybe someone else in the forum.

You could use brushes, either in photoshop or illustrator.
Look for swirly brushes in google.

Well, for those yes, Photoshop or Illustrator, better luck with Illustrator. I tend to look for old wallpaper designs fo inspiration, thats what I did there (i own phirebrush)

The ornate design behind the logo was from an old wallpaper. Our phirebrush logo was created using Illustrator.

The best program to use would be Illustrator, no doubt. But it's very possible to make this type of design via Photoshop, Freehand, Paint, or just traditionally on paper with a pencil. Just study the pattern and then work it out using the "Pen" tool in most programs.

just remember... copy, paste, then flip horizontal and align as desired

just so that you don't have to do both sides and go crazy trying to match them up
