Problem with splines->convert to edit. mesh

I made a line object, making only half of what I wanted in total, then cloned it and rotated -180 degrees to make it match up, and then I attached them together, and made 1 whole spline object. Now I want to extrude it, but when I add an extrude modifier and try to extrude to spline, it doesn't extrude a ploygon of it, it extrudes a few parts of the lines. If I try to convert the object to an editable mesh or poly, the spline just dissapears... I am very confused, because I did something similar to this the other day, and it worked fine when I converted it to an editable mesh, then only difference is that this time, I started with half, cloned and attached after, but I don't see how that would make a difference.

Can any help me? Any additional info is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I realize that it is probably confusing, so I'll attach a screenshot to show you at least what my screen looks like.

did you say you attached the 2 splines together? or did you mean you welded them together?? coz there's a big difference between attach and weld in max....just make sure your spline is close, select each vertices and weld them not attach....your spline is simple enough for the extrude modifier not to work....

You need a surface modifier. At least, I think you do. It's been a while since I used MAX.
