Excellent free plugin for surfacing
Dont know if anybody here uses it but there is a great program I just stumbled across called simbiont its made by Darksim
They have versions for just about every 3d package and its free. There are also hundred of shaders uou can download for free to give your surfaces nice effects.
They also have a program that can make the shaders although that costs money i beleive 
hope this will help somone I just playig with it at the moment
