Autotrace

Hey,

I've never worked with vectors or Adobe Illustrator before, and am now attempting to do so. I have a logo already designed in Photoshop and am now trying to autotrace it (after failed attempts to trace it by hand).

This question is about autotracing and Illustrator as a whole I guess. My question is, why can't I have multiple selections? That is, multiple objects in one layer? I can only autotrace one shape and then when I click somewhere else, the previous path of anchors disappears.

Illustrator seems just too separate from Photoshop for me to be able to figure out on my own.

Thanks,
Sod

Do you have a fill or stroke color selected? Paths usually disappear when they are not active and have no color information, but they are still there.
You can have mutliple objects on the same layer.

Rather than using the autotrace in Illustrator (which is horrible by the way) Try selecting your objects in Photoshop. From the paths pallete in Photoshop choose "Make Working Path" Then name your path. Do this for all objects you want in Illustrator. Then choose File > Export > Paths to Illustrator from teh Photoshop menu. Save hte export. Open the file in Illustrator. You will not see anything because all the paths will ahve no fill or stroke initially. Just hit Command=Y (Mac) or Control-Y (PC) to switch to artwork mode and you'll see all your paths.

This method is generally more accurate than using Illustrator's autotrace tool.
