2d into 3d

Hey I took a break from the 3d world hence it took me a minute to catch on to some of the programs... But I do remember there was a program where you can turn 2d images into 3d images.

Is it possible to turn a 2d jpg , png, or gif into a nice looking 3d image?

In 3d max the only way i can think is to set the 2d image as your background and model it from the image. Other then that i'm not too sure

AutoCAD allows you to convert a 2d image into 3d, with some work
