Black and white people
Working on a logo that incorporates a black and white image of a man's head/shoulders and I'm having a difficult time getting it to look good. Since there is only one color (black) it is hard to decide which shadows, shapes etc to include while preserving the original integrity of the face.
Got any tips? Also, any b/w people vector art you can post as examples would help tremendously.
Here is an example, not my work but something found on illustratorworld.com. Not sure I like the shading on this face, but this is an example of the type of b/w art I'm trying to do.

Just make the darker shadows and main features of the face black and leave the rest white. It is a matter of trying over and over again until you like it.

I think you got it right with "it's a matter of trying over and over again until you like it." Still not happy with what I've got but I'm working on it..
Here's the first quick 10-min attempt with the pencil tool...

... and a more detailed followup.
Any hints for an Illustrator noob? Maybe try using the pen tool instead?

you could always put a photo of the person into photoshop - change it to greyscale and adjust the threshold (and possibly the levels depending on the image) until you get something similar to what you want... then perfect it in illustrator using the pen tool

I think it looks good except for the fact that he looks kind of cross-eyed.

to answer your question above wildblue the pen tool will help you so much more then the pencil tool if you are creating vecto graphics. my opinion is that it is the best tool in illustrator with the exception of pathfinder.
