Adding Textures/Materials to 3dsm

When ever i hit the "m" and get the material editor and go to apply a material, i have no materials to apply. It only comes up with like seven blank materials to choose from all of which are grey. To rectify this, i would like to know how to add new materials that i got from variouse sites to this list? Does anyone know how to do it, or is it impossible to do?

Well I'm not aware of too many *free* texture sites (although a quick google search could prove me wrong), but I really suggest learning how to make your own materials in 3dsm. 3d studio max's material editor is very powerful (as well as complex), but learning how to use it is essential to creating a great scene. I suggest going to places like www.3dbuzz.com and www.3dcafe.com to look for tutorials to teach you about the material editor. As well as searching google for Texturing tutorials.

Well, you actually have to make your materials.

*GASP*

If you go to a site that gives out textured .jpgs, those are just supposed to go into the diffuse slot (color). 3dsmax and every other 3d program is the same, you pretty much have to make your own materials.

However there are some premade mats that come with 3dsm that you can check out, not really the best but its a start.

Err... call me crazy, but i don't think he's asking where to get textures from... he wants to know how to get them into "the list"...

Righty ho, let me just open up max, as i doubt i'll word it correctly otherwise.

Right, With your material editor open:

To change the colour of one of these grey materials simply adjust the "Diffuse" colour, try playing with the Specular levels and Glossiness for alright/ish effects.

To add a texture, click the blank box right next to the Diffuse colour (there will be 2 boxes, hit the one on top). Now a menu should open up, Select Bitmap and search for your material.

Now you need to assign that material to the object, simple enough. Either drag it onto the object, or if you've already got the object selected, click the "assign material to selection" button, it's shaped like a Circle, with an arrow pointing to a box.

Now then, here's the annoying part... your texture isn't showing in the viewport!!! No worries... just click the button that looks like a blue and white checkered cube (in the material editor), This allows the map to be shown in the viewport.

Edit
Chances are it wont look right, so i suggest selecting the object with the material on it and going to the UVW Map in the Modifier selection and adjusting things in there, if it's a basic shape like a box and your material is also square... here's my Tip.

First off, Modifiers > UVW Map.

select any viewport Bar the perspective viewport... you need a straight angle. Now on the UVW Paramaters, select Planar and click View Align.

Or Alternitively, you could just select "Box" haha... whoops.
