Vectorizing a pixelized image?

Relatively new to Illustrator, I'm trying to vectorize a small jpg image, when I zoom in on the image it becomes pixelized and loses integrity, making it hard to determine actual outlines and where to place my anchor points. What do you guys do? Just improvise, or is there a trick to working with small images?

ja... hmm, I don't have Adobe Illustrator, but what my TAFE teacher taught me was to Posterise the .jpg in Adobe Photoshop or adjust it in a way so that you get all these block of colour. And then, you put a trace.. I'm not sure what the exact name is though Smile

Unless you really have to make the vector version exactly like the original image, I don't see any problems in improvising a bit.
