illustrator: vector based confusion

not to knock the above listed artist's works or most of the vector based images i've seen, but correct me if i'm wrong, is the artwork simply tracings over a photograph? if so, doesn't this negate the fact that it should be referred to as art and merely vector based reproductions?

i've seen some images where photographs are blatantly ripped off with the use of a simple trace/outline effect.

just to clarify, i don't mean to offend anyone by this thread, but, imho, i think it cheapens the concept of vector based art if the work isn't completed by an individual or group of individuals working from initial sketches to final renderings.

For beginners yes, it is mostly tracing over photos so that you get used to the tools.
But as you get better you either a) make your own illustrations directly on the computer or b) sketch what you want on paper and then trace it in Illustrator.
An example of tracing without photos is http://www.jason-brooks.com/portfolio/
Also, one uses Illustrator to create logos, business cards and many other things (mostly for printing) that don't require a photo for reference.

as they say 'art imitates life'

as a visual artist, its the same aspect - I paint
what I see.

as a photographer, whats in the view finder is captured to image..

mastering the medium to perfect that imitation (or variation)
as close as possible does not cheapen it by any means, no different with digital art (pixel or vector)...

just my point of view

quynh, some work i've seen is pretty reliant on tracing photographs. i do what malephika mentioned, i make some sketches in my sketchbook and tweak them until they are how i want them. then i scan the sketch and redraw it with illustrator. of course, i don't call that art, i call it illustration. there is a difference.
