Select and linking in 3D

Hi,
I was following this tutorial and need to link 2 objects together.

Although i found the linking icon, i can't seem to get the 2 objects to link together.

Hope someone can tell what went wrong?

What 3D Program are you using? I could help you out if you use 3ds max.
