Guns/weaponry Materialing

I am currently working on the modelling of a beretta in 3ds Max 4.0 ... but I don't know much at all about how I could go about materialing/texturing the gun - so that it looks real. I don't know if it is using lighting, or materialing or what - that makes some guns look so real, but there was one image I saw that really impressed me:

And I was wondering if anyone could help me, or link me to a tutorial that could.

ps - image was taken from Smashmethod's art gallery -http://smashmethod.mg2.org/main.html

Yeah, I had seen both of those tutorials prior to posting, and I think that the modelling tut is quite helpful, but do you think that the image I posted would have been made using a similar technique to the one used in the skinning tutorial you linked to?

'cause I thought there might have been some other way of doing it... maybe not

thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated
