adobe illustrator gurus! help needed...!!

would somoene be able to help me on msn?
because i really dont know how to explain it on here.....:P

basically..i've got this dragon logo that has film for its body shaped in a circular motion. what im trying to do is change the way its shaped into a more opened curvy dragon..but having trouble finding out how the person who made the original did one one part of the body...

in one part, there are other parts within that one part...
when i traced over itand try to fill it..it fills the whole part filling the parts within that one part. i want only one part fill without effecting the other parts and without having to fill the parts within at all with another color because when i save it, the negative space has to be transparent.
get it? if you do....

please help!!!

your explaination was kinda hard to understand, but based on what i can make out from it, here's how i would go about trying to do this:

1) make your main shape
2) make the shapes you need to cut out of it
3) select all shapes you want to cut out of the main shape
4) go to pathfinder>add
5) select the main piece and the combined piece and, depending on which shape is in front or behind, go to pathfinder>subtract from front/subtract behind

hope this helps, if not, pm me with further details.
