how to crop off a part of a circle

Hi,
I need to know how to crop off a part of a circle in illustrator.

What i want to do is, to draw a circle with no fill, only a stroke,
Theni want to cut through the middle of it. But when ever i try to subtractm it closes up the gaps. How do i do that?

Lots of ways:

1. Draw the circle with only the stroke. Use the "expand" option to turn the stroke into it's own closed shape. Then use the pathfinder to subtrace something from it and you should be left with the shape you want.

2. Draw half a circle using the pen tool and put a stroke on that object.

3. Draw the circle with the stroke you want, then make a clipping mask to hide the chunk of the object you don't want to see.

Hopefully one of those options will work for you.

::classic:

put a black box covering half the circle and select both items and subtract, make sure the box is on top.

You could try using the scissor tool?
Select the points on the circles path with the tool and press delete.. you can remove whatever parts of the circle`s path with that if its just a stroked circle
If its filled use the knife tool instead.. knife out the section you want to delete, use the direct selection tool on a blank area of page and then click it on the part of the circle you want to remove and hit delete
