If it doesn't have to be done in 3d photoshop would be much easier, theres plenty of tuts for commets and such.

I'd hafta agree with that. From what you describe it sounds like it has to be an animation. I think trying to get all that done (and done well) is a little too much to learn and create in one day.

Ah its ok now, my teacher decided to shorten the project with a normal demonstration. But i would still like to know how to create a nice realistic looking starfield that i could use in maya. Any ideas? thanks in advance.

you cannot expect to just DO that man! Gotta start at the beginning and learn how it works and do some varying tuts along the way. By then you may have a reasonable idea of how to go about it.
Ive only just started using maya but it is nooooooooot easy peasy like MSPaint

well i remember reading about this, and posting about it myself actually. i was told to make a paricle emitter and set a camera right in front of it. (that was so you could get taht star wars/trek hyperspeed effect)

to make a comet on fire? well im sure there are better ways then this, but:

make a sphere, deform it a bit using its vertices or faces.. or whatever. make it look irregular. the rest all lies in how you texture/light the scene.

/edit oops forgot about the fire part
heheh

select the dynamics menu from maya. then i forget which one, but there is a menu with a fire option in it. you cant miss it. just click on every menu in the dynamics toolset.

first, take an image of a star plane in photoshop. in maya use a poly plane and map the star plane as a file texture to that plane. That will be your starfield. creat a nurb sphere and deform it any way u like for the meteor. take a cv curve tool and shape the path u want for the meteor to follow. attach the meteor to that path. select the meteor and attach a particle emitter to it. tweak the particles to emit a decent amount. select particles and use a flame colored gradient to get the coloring correct. attach the particles to a vortex field behind the meteor and group the field to the meteor. Thats basically it. Its a very rough overview on how to do it but i dont exactly feel like sitting down and typing as lengthy tutorial on it right now. If u have more questions just ask. Be sure to do this all in a side view and square the camera's film gate to encompass only the star plane.
