Photoshop Keeps messing up, resetting, and crashes all the time. I've reinstalled it and it still does it!!

Well its bound to happen to you atleast once, but there is a simple solution to this. Reinstalling photoshop doesn't even work some times. 90% of the time the problem can be corrected by deleting your photoshop prefrences file which is located on my pc(Win XP) at: C:\Documents and Settings\Justin\Application Data\Adobe\Photoshop\7.0\Adobe Photoshop 7.0 Settings
Once you delete the file, restart photoshop. Photoshop will search for the pref file and if it can not be located it will create a new one.

**NOTE**
You can also reset your Pref file during PS start up by the following key combo: ALT--CTRL--SHIFT--DELETE (Press and hold this combo while PS is starting). This will result in a pop up menu asking you if you want to reset your prefs, select either 'yes' or 'no'.
**CAUTION** Using this method does not let you save a copy of your old pref file, so use your discretion when doing this.

Proper Category Use

First of all, I'd like to thank everyone here for continuing to be useful and helpful, and for remaining patient with those in need of help even when the question has an obvious answer or is just plain redundant.

With that said, I'd like to simply make a request that is somewhat unrelated to my comments above.
With the growing popularity of Tutorial Forums as a hub for Digital Media related help, more people have begun finding an alternate use for the plethora of information at their fingertips. Yes, that alternate use is as a personal gallery for critiquing images and website layouts.

While I enjoy the fact that people are willingly coming to Tutorial Forums in search of a critique, and showing open mindedness in the process, it has become a nuissance to find that some of these critique requests are being placed in the wrong categories.

The lack of categorical obedience is not really a problem for us Administrators, but more of a problem for you Members. You see, by not placing your work in the proper category, you are limiting the amount of critiquing that your work my receive, and also setting yourself up for a flame or two.

Please keep your critique requests confined to the Image Showoff section of the site, where you will certainly receive positive and useful comments about your work, whatever it may be.

Thank You.

*Note: I am placing this in the Adobe Photoshop forum because that is typically where the critiques are accidentally placed.

How do I make a certain texture?

One of the best ways of achieving a realistic texture or effect is by using reference images/photographs/ or real objects.

Many examples can be found on the web, from books, or simply lying around your house.

Study your reference images and try and understand what makes them look the way they do. Examine the texture, examine the highlights, lowlights and shadowing. Choose a consistant light direction/source and stick with it. All of the above will add to the realism of your work.

As you work on your image, keep the reference material nearby so you can use it for comparisons.

(added by Vp)

----------------------------------------

This is some of the basic questions that get asked pretty regularly around here. Although not a huge list but it will definately grow over time as we add more of the common questions and other resources to the list. Feel Free to add anything guys Smile Or correct my spelling mistakes Grin

PHOTOSHOP CS - Please Read!

As we are all aware, the new version of Photoshop, Photoshop CS, has recently been released.

As with many new software releases, there are sometimes minor bugs, and very often much confusion over new features associated with such releases.

Please Note:

For users of the new version (Photoshop CS), the first place you should be looking for help in regards to installation, short cut, and any other sort of technical issues should be

1. The User Manual
2. The Help Files
3. The Online Help Files
4. The offical Adobe Forum
5. and of course, www.adobe.com

The primary function of the PS forum here at TF, is to help new users with issues more related to design problems, and day to day issues regarding the use of PS tools, and general image manipulation/graphic design/web design techniques. We will of course try and help answer all questions PS related though they are not our primary focus.

As such, as an owner/user of a legitimately bought copy of PS CS, your first course of action should be to follow the 5 points mentioned above. You paid for the software so make use of all your privaledges.

**************************************************

To all users not using a legitimate version of PS.

Most forms of illegally obtained software have flaws, short comings, missing tools, etc. We at TF do not condone the use of such software and we do not want this discussed or do we want you to advertise the fact you are using illegal software. This is a fundemental rule here at TF and will be enforced by the Moderators.

We reserve all rights to edit, delete threads, and warn and/or ban any member who brings the good name of TF into disrepute by abusing these rules.

There has been of late a number of threads relating to PS CS that have been verging on the edge, so beware.

--------------------------
Problem with Shortcut Keys?

The 'cracked' version of Photoshop CS is notorious about the short cut keys not working. If your using warez, thats just your fault.

If you do have a legitimate copy then please contact Adobe . They are the creators of the software so i'm sure they'll know exactly what to do.

Can't Find Your 3D Transform Filter in PS CS? *Added by Kryptonite*

The 3D transform filter does not install this filter. You must do it manually. For details on this, read this thread:
http://www.tutorialforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66317

Be warned and use your good judgements.
****************************************

Thanks for your considerations and cooperation in this matter and enjoy this forum and enjoy your new version of PS.
