Photoshop Books?

Considering purchasing a Photoshop Book. I'm a fairly avid user of photoshop, but theres also alot i dont know, looking for any suggestions on books to get to know photoshop better. Hoping for something that explains the basics (like wtf a vector mask is and how to use it, for example) that also includes say tutorials. Looking for something that is also user friendly (i.e. i can read it and do it in photoshop at the same time..) any suggestions on books?

i personally believe that spending money on books for programs should only be for modelling programs such as 3dsmax, and others. so i dont think you should buy a book for ps, there is enough tutorials out there on the net.

but who cares im jus a lil kid and this is my opinion.

I know there are alot of tutorials and what not on the internet but im mainly looking for something that explains all the basics and semi basic parts of photoshop. The way i see it is you can follow a tutorial no problem, but i wanna know the mechanics behind it. Im not a big fan of following directions/tutorials, id rather just know what to do and how to do it. I dunno, i dont think im explaining myself very well heh. I just think you cant make truely advanced things until you learn all of the basics.

well basically, tutorials on the internet teach you the basic... from teaching you the tools to making detailed layouts.

i think im gonna be talking about wut ur sayin,but...

there are many tutorials out there that say what a tool does, what this layer effect does, what the macros are, tons more things. after u read some of them, lets say u follow some directions in an orb tutorial and succeed. after u do it a few times u try something new like trying new shapes. right there, you learn some basic things right there.

so basically if u follow the tutorial's instructions, u start learning what each step of the utorial does, so u can use that with different things/objects.

or you can just experiment with whatever you use to see what the effects are, get used to it and start using them together. cuz if u buy a book it will basically tell you everything that the internet has, just in a little more detail because they have more time in their hands.

i've said it before, and i'll say it again, books are, in my mind, pointless when there is a thing called the "internet" (they have that on computers now? -Homer Simpson). Anything that you want to learn can be found, usually through quality sites like tutorial forums etc.

opps, didn't read everything properley. Yes, for the basics, a book can be perfect, otherwise, the internet is just as useful as any book.
