PHP/MySql training/courses/certs?
Hello everyone,
I was wondering if there were any courses or online classes that anyone could recommend for php/mysql web development. Let me kind of give you my story. Im going to be graduating in may with a degree in cis which has a business and computer core. Ive had some 3rd gen languages and stuff that i know well but that really doesnt interest me anymore (e.g. cobol/rpg), but ive had some modern languages such as c, c++ and vb.net. So the career im cut out for at the moment would be a as400 operator or systems analyst doing business apps, not much fun. Its a little late but ive come to the realization that my true passion is for web development/programming.
I could go into the web development program at my college but as you may know college is very expensive and im not really interested in many of the required courses. In my free time over the past year i have read several tutorials and bought a few books on php/mysql and I would venture to say i have and intermediate level understanding of the material. This is where I became intrigued with web programming. I was wondering if there was such a thing as a php/mysql certification or something related. I live in the Kansas City area so ive been looking at training courses such as this one:
Link
I realize I could learn everything taught in that course through the process of asking questions, reading tutorials, reading books, but being that im graduating its really time to get into a field.
Sixteen hundred dollars for a 4 day course seems like alot but I am looking for something to prepare me to jump right into the php/mysql development market. I know that there are some very professional people that browse these forums and I was hoping to get your thoughts on this course or better yet books/courses that you feel have really helped you get to where you are today.
Thanks alot for your time!

I dont think there are any php courses since it's free. Theres tons of ASP courses because Microsoft wants everyone using ASP, and that means more IIS Win2000 servers so I think they are trying to run out linux heh
If you know C++ php should be EASY
The manual is great
www.php.net/manual/en

OoO The Manual
The manual, what an ingenious idea. Is there a complete printable copy somewhere? I can only seem to find it in the online collapsable format.
Thanks for the reply.

Yea, you can download a windows html viewer version so you dont have to open a browser to view it.
If you have any problems, just post here.
You should find it pretty strait forward sine you know other programming languages

Ahh the manual
Great thanks ill look into that!
My main concern is after learning what i need to know, how do I show that i know what i am competent enough to take part in development projects? Do I just build a portfolio?

well you dont read all of it, you learn nessecary functions and for certain projects you will be required to do soemthing so you will think of a way to do it, and search up functions that can do the job for you.
