perhaps he used the same technique as the bar code trick?....

I haven't looked at his barcode trick, but if you right-click on the background image and save as, you'll see that its only 1 pixel high by 18 pixels wide. I'm assuming that he started with a light blue background, added intermitant dark blue pixels and then just set that as his background image.

That's exactly what I was thinking. So I opened up PS and gave it a try and came up with this someone else can probably do this better...
