Can't figure out tutorial - Inset Buttons

I have tried the inset buttons tutorial, but on step 3, the last part about the paths and vector mask, I have a question. Where did that vector mask come from? The tutorial doesn't tell you anywhere to add a vector mask... I am a beginner at Photoshop, so please go easy on me, I'm kind of dense on this sort of thing...

check out step #2 more carefully Plug, make sure you are using the 'shape tool' see the little graphics Robouk provided and make sure you have the correct options selected (like shown).

You should be all set

Um... I did use the ellipse tool, not the ellipse marquee tool... ¬_¬ , eh... i don't know how to make this... could someone please make this and put it in a .psd and send it to my eMail? If they could do this, that would be great. Thanks in advance!

look closer heh! in the 'shape tool' options bar (robouk has an example in step 2--long thin graphic), the first 3 little icons are the options for that tool, make sure you have the first one selected like shown (shape layers). This will make a vector mask....

try harder friend Smile

Hi Plug, I could tell you an easier way to achieve the same effect if you want to try that, it looks 99% the same as what robouk uses, but it skips the vector masks. Therefor it's easier for us n00bies Smile

I could type it all here if you want (since my tutorials section on my website isn't online yet) or send me a private message if you prefer. (considering it's a substantial explanation)

The point of using vector masks is you can edit things later.

Well, I looked closer, and I found my problem, but now, it doesn't look like it's inset. Maybe my path was too big? Too small? Please help me on this!

I know that Robouk, but he's new to this and the way I use is something that takes 1 minute to do, and 1 minute to change when you make the original "button" bigger, therefor it's not something that takes ages to change to a successful look.

It's a way you yourself use on other tutorials - the gradient underlayer, with a slight blur, it looks the part, and it's alot less trouble for someone who doesn't understand exactly what to do with vectors.

Yes vamp, but why restrict yourself because of your ability, you wont learn anything.

Jump in the deep end, you'll be greatful for it later.
