How to create an object that's shaped like a ring?

Hi,
Sorry, this is an absolute beginners question, but I couldn't figure it out:
I've got two paths which build a ring object (I mean a simple circle with a hole in the middle...). But whenever I want to color it and click on a swatch the full circle gets colored, so it is kind of ignoring the path which forms the hole in the middle.
How can I do that?
Thanks a lot!!

In freehand you use Punch.

Not sure if it's called that in illustrator but the think it should be.

one thing you can do is to make a larger circle, fill that with the color of your choice. Then make a smaller circle and fill that with the color of the background.

You need to select both paths, then Object>Path>Compound Path>Make (or Ctrl+Cool.

Also have a look at the Pathfinder palette (shift+F9) for some more wyas of affecting multiple paths (pause over the buttons to see the tooltips).

With all Illustrator palettes, click on the arrow at the top right to see the various options.

Edit: urgh, only just noticed you don't state whether your're, using Ill or Fh, hope it's Ill 'cos I don't know nuffink about Fh:o
