ping times

I just need to clear something up. I know a ping is the time it takes to "contact" the server, usually in milliseconds. I was getting a 20-30 ping in a CS server, but I know this can't be right - as a total time over the 10 hops it takes to reach the server. As a total, Visual Route gives me about 20 seconds through my ISP servers. Around 40-60 is what I usually get in a game, but still, how can that be the total trip? One hop outside my ISP is about 20. (At 50ms, every second I receive information from the server about 20 times).

So I was wondering, is the ping time the average ping time among the hops or the total time. (Please say total Tongue)

Go to Start Menu>Run>Command and type in

ping www.yahoo.com

Or some other site...usually for my comp it's about 33 ms. It's the total time it takes for the packet to go from your computer to the site and back...otherwise 33ms would be pretty ****ty. Grin

So its total time for there and back? (I know what pings are and everything, I just didn't know if it was the whole route, average for each hop, etc.)

I'm getting about 45 for yahoo.

Actually, now that I think of it, I'm not so sure...unfortunately, I'm behind a firewall/proxy so ping doesn't work for me. Sad

It could very well be either, but I would hope that it's total.

250 is pretty slow...a month ago, for a week it was around 350 here, more than 10 times slower than usual. And of course ATTBI doesn't do **** on the phone...

I think its the round trip, because go to google and do this search
ping glossary
Most sites say it is a test to see if a server is responding, calculating the time it takes to get the packets back. Good news Smile lol

wow, it really depends on the server..

www.yahoo.com > 33ms
www.tutorialforums.com > 73ms
www.wwu.edu > 2ms

btw, for thw wwu.edu one, im on the same network as that server, so its over LAN.

2 for over lan is bad. you should have at least under 1 Smile (the lowest is .3ms for ethernet).
