smoothing edges????

if you make an outline of, a face for example, using the pen tool, where ever there is an anchor point it is jagged .

So how could i make it so that is was a lot smoother.

You are going to have to use the pen tool for this, which is probably one of the most difficult tools to master in illustrator. Basically, instead of clicking for your points, you are going to have to click and drag in the direction you want your curve to follow. This will get a smooth line for you. Play with it for a while, and you will get the hang of it.
