Deleting part of a font in AI

Hi

I am very new to Illustrator 9. I have created a logo that has a heart shape in it, now i got this heart shape from cutting it out from a font where it had a box around it and an arrow piercing the heart, id did this PS6 just leaving the heart.

Can anybody tell me how to do the same in AI please, i have tryed using the erase tool but nothing happens

can you give us a visual example, I'm slightly puzzled...

If you want to edit the visual appearance of a font, convert to outlines and edit the path.
