This is a small setup for your home, I assume?

You'll need an internet connection (usually a cable or DSL modem) and a router. Connect the modem to the source: coaxial cable for cable, telephone line for DSL. Then connect your modem to your router with a short Ethernet cord. The router will broadcast the internet to your machines, either wirelessly or via Ethernet connection.

Choices on router will really depend on what you use it for. Wireless is a good pick for home, where security isn't such a pressing issue. Particularly good if you're looking to use laptops, since most new laptops come stocked with wireless capability. You'll usually have to purchase a wireless card if you're using a desktop.

However wireless setups are inherently less secure because they broadcast to everyone within listening distance. This is why it's easy to steal wireless internet from your neighbors in apartments, dorms and things. Though you can secure it with encryption.

I personally use a wired router. Roomie and I both have desktops, and lots of close neighbors in my apartment complex (no free skeezy internet from this guy Smile)

Linksys routers are notoriously unsecure. But again, if it's for a house setup, it might not matter so much.

LAN is local, no need for the internet connection unless you needed to communicate out. Technically, LANs are private.

Are you really need for a very basic LAN, no internet connection, is a switch that all your computers are hooked up to, then statically assign the addresses to the machines. You'll be able to share files and whatnot.

However, I have a feeling you're misusing 'LAN' and need what Sparky recommended. Don't hate on Linksys though, they're as secure as you make them. There's worse.
